How much does is cost to register a domain name?

The cost of the name depends on the domain extension.

Ongoing costs: The registry/NIC fee grants you ownership to the name for however many years you choose your Ownership Term to be (between one and 10 years). To keep the name after this period a renewal fee must be paid to the relevant registry/NIC (a different Ownership Term may be chosen for subsequent renewal.

REGISTRATION COSTS FOR OTHER DOMAIN NAMES (e.g. unrestricted country domains)

There are many other domain extensions around the world for which registration is unrestricted, i.e. anyone can register - you don't need to be a resident of that particular country. However, the administration and registry/NIC fees for each country vary widely and are constantly changing. If you are interested in registering names for any of these domains we can check availability and advise you on the cost. See our section on other unrestricted domains.

When I purchase a domain name what exactly am I paying for?

The amount you pay includes:

our once-only administration fee for getting the name registered
the mandatory fee (known as a NIC fee) payable to the relevant domain name registry(or NIC - Network Information Centre) which grants you ownership of the name for a limited number of years. The number of years depends on the Ownership Term (renewable) which, depending on the domain extension, is either fixed (e.g. 2 years for a .co.uk name) or selectable (1 to 10 years for .com, .net and .org names) by you, the person purchasing the name.

What are registry (NIC) fees?
To register a name with a particular domain extension (e.g. .co.uk) and have continued ownership of that name, fees (known as NIC fees) are imposed periodically by the domain name registry (or NIC - Network Information Centre) responsible for administering names which have that extension. These registry fees and the frequency at which they must be paid vary widely for each registry/NIC.

When I purchase a domain name what exactly am I getting?

You get ownership of the name for a limited number of years depending on the Ownership Term (renewable). You also get unlimited domain parking and DNS services (e.g. domain name transfer and pointing). Other companies have hidden charges for these services - we provide these FREE!

Are there any on-going costs?

If you want to keep your domain name for a long time (extending beyond the duration of the Ownership Term which applies to the name when first registered e.g. 2 years for a .co.uk name) or forever, the you have to pay renewal registry/NIC fees (see Continued ownership of domain names below).

Continued ownership of domain names

When your current ownership term has elapsed you have to decide whether you want to renew your ownership of the name (the current owner will always receive the first opportunity to renew ownership of a domain name). To renew ownership, a renewal fee must be paid to the relevant registry (NIC) which grants you ownership of the name for a further limited number of years. The new Ownership Term will either be the same as before if fixed (e.g. 2 years for a .co.uk name) or, if selectable (1 to 10 years for .com, .net and .org names), may be different from the previous one if required.

What is domain parking?

Domain name registration requires 2 domain name servers to hold the domain name - known as parking. Many companies will catch you out by charging an additional $49 to use their domain name servers if you don't happen to have your own (and not many people have their own names servers, do they?) Register-domain-names.com provide the use of their servers FREE!
